Clinical Pastoral Education

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is a student-centered educational experience that draws upon the learner’s life and the learner’s ministry in order to enrich the growth, education, and work of the learner in ministry. The ministry context for the learner (i.e., the CPE student) is usually a hospital where s/he ministers to patients, families, and staff. The learner’s life experience and clinical experience come together to influence the learning so that the learner listens to both, draws from both, and becomes a more self-aware pastoral caregiver. The learner’s awareness impacts the learner’s ministry. This page and the posts on them are a trail of some of the impacts of CPE upon my ministry as a pastor and my life as a person. They are primarily from my days training to become a CPE supervisor.
